A few years ago, only few people knew who Barack Obama was.
Today, almost everyone in the civilised world knows who he is.
His meteoric rise to power and popularity can be attributed to several factors, one of which is his undeniable oratorical prowess.
There is no doubt that this man who is privileged to be the first african american president of the USA is one of the most impressive orators of this generation.
Over the next couple of days or may be weeks, I will highlight some of the secrets that make him a powerful public speaker.I will also share with you simple ways to implement them no matter what level you are right now in your speaking career.
The first thing I will like you to do is to watch this video.
It is the video of his acceptance speech at the 2008 Democratic National Convention in Denver, Colorado.
Enjoy.

The great thing about public speaking is that it can be learned.
It makes no difference if you are shy or introverted.
I tell people that I used to be shy and they find that difficult to believe because of how well I am now able to communicate with people when I am on stage and off the stage. If you are shy, do not worry, you still stand a chance of becoming an effective speaker.
You should be further encouraged by the story of Demosthenes, a man considered to be one of the finest orators of ancient Greece. When he started speaking in public, he was nervous and troubled by a speech impediment but he was determined to succeed. He decide to work on his speaking skills.
Historians say he went to the seaside everyda, put pebbles in his mouth(don’t ask me why he put pebbles in his mouth) and spoke as loud as he could for several hours.Consequently, his voice grew louder, stronger and he became more confident. He became one of the most respected speakers in recorded history.
What is my point?
Being shy, nervous or suffering from a speech impediment is not an excuse to stop speaking. You can overcome every challenge.
First, make up your mind to improve your skills. Then take steps towards that.
A good way to start is to go to a secluded place and act like you are speaking to thousands of people.
That implies that you must use your imagination.
Visualise.Imagine.Think.See yourself speaking clearly…
articulately…
impressively…
effectively to people from different walks of life.
I have a habit of visualizing the audience before I mount the podium. That boosts your confidence.
Try it.You would agree with me that it works.
I look forward to your testimony.

Today , I want to share something special with you.
It’s simply the best way to learn how to speak.
Now this may shock you.It may even amuse you-the best way to learn how to speak is to speak.
You may read all the books on public speaking in the library down the road.
You may attend all the expensive seminars and high-value coaching programs but if you don’t stand up and speak out, you will not be any better than the person who didn’t go through the process of acquiring all the information you acquired.
So, what should you do?
Speak out.
Let your voice be heard.
After all you have something to say, so say it!

1.DESIRE
Desire is the starting point of all achievement.
You must have a burning desire to be a great speaker. You cannot afford to go with the “what will be will bw” attitude. You can’t afford to say “If God wants me to be a good speaker, I will be” You must desire it.
2.DECISION
Desire is the starting point but it doesn’t end there. No matter how intense your desire is, if it is not backed up with a decision, it will just remain a desire.Take the next step-decide to become a great speaker.Decide to invest in yourself.
Decide to read good books, listen to powerful speeches and refine your skills by speaking as often as you can, starting with those around you.
3.DETERMINATION
You must be determined to be the best. This is a very important point because many people will try to discourage you by picking on your grammatical errors and mannerisms but din’t let that discourage you.If you don’t give up, the people who are laughing at you now will soon have to pay to listen to you.

4.DEPTH
Every world-renown speaker has depth.I am privileged to speak often and one of my key considerations whenever I’m preparing to speak is the depth of my presentation. It’s not enough to be charismatic, you must be incisive. You must be loaded with vital and relevant information that will help your audience to solve their problems.
5.DYNAMISM
From Martin Luther King to Barrack Obama; from Paul Adefarasin to Fela Durotoye , the most respected speakers are dynamic. They are not boring or bland. They are far from the predictable. They are fresh. That’s why people keep on listening to them. You must become dynamic in your style of delivery.
Every time I am privileged to speak, I ensure that I do or say something that takes people off guard. With a little bit of creativity, you can do that too.
6.DISCIPLINE
Discipline is an indispensable ingredient in the soup of success.
It takes discipline to prepare a great speech.
It takes discipline to deliver a great speech.
It takes discipline to stay humble after delivering a great speech. It takes discipline to stay fresh and relevant. You must be disciplined.
7.DIVINE HELP
The person who knows the exact needs of the people you are speaking to is God.Remember, God made you, the speaker and he created everyone you’d ever speak to.Therefore, the best person to talk to before you talk to your audience is the God who made you and everyone you’ll ever talk to.The good thing about God is that He is always available whenever you reach for Him, so never hesitate to call on Him.By the way, He is not a man who gets tired…and His network is never too busy to accommodate your call…neither does his battery run out of power.
